The short answer
Usually, yes. Sleep earplugs turn sound down, they do not switch it off, and an alarm is loud, sudden and close to you, so most people still hear it. But ears and alarms are all different, so test yours on your first night. If you need to hear a baby or someone you care for, do not rely on earplugs.
It is the first worry almost everyone has before trying earplugs: what if I sleep through my alarm? It is a fair question. Here is why most people still wake up on time, how to check it for yourself in two minutes, and a few easy backups.
Why can you still hear an alarm with earplugs in?
Earplugs made for sleep take the edge off sound. They do not block everything. That is on purpose.
Snoring, traffic and a humming fridge are steady sounds in the background. Turning them down a little is often enough to stop them keeping you awake. An alarm is the opposite. It is loud, sharp, sudden and usually right next to your head. So it tends to cut straight through.
Your brain also keeps half an ear open while you sleep. It pays more attention to sounds that matter to you, like your own alarm, than to sounds it has learned to ignore.
Earplugs turn the night down. They are not meant to turn the morning off
How do I test it before I rely on it?
Do this once, on your first night. It takes two minutes.
- 1. Put your earplugs inThe same way you will wear them to sleep, with the tip size you plan to use.
- 2. Lie down on your sideLie the way you usually sleep. Your pillow can change how much you hear.
- 3. Set an alarm for two minutes awayUse your normal alarm, at your normal volume, in its normal spot.
- 4. Close your eyes and waitIf you hear it clearly, you are all set. If it sounds faint, use the tips below.
What if my alarm sounds too faint?
- Move it closerPut your phone or clock on the nightstand next to your head, not across the room.
- Turn it upPick a louder, sharper tone. Soft chimes are the easiest to miss.
- Use a vibrating alarmA smartwatch or fitness band that buzzes on your wrist works with any earplugs.
- Try a rising alarmMany phones can start soft and get louder, so it keeps going until you notice it.
- Add lightA sunrise lamp or a timer on a bedside light helps your body start waking up.
- Set a backupA second alarm five minutes later is a cheap way to feel safe while you get used to them.
Can you hear a smoke alarm with earplugs in?
Smoke alarms are made to be very loud, and most people still hear them through sleep earplugs. Do not guess, though. Put your earplugs in, lie down, and have someone press the test button on your smoke alarm. If you are a very deep sleeper or have hearing loss, ask about smoke alarms that flash a strobe light or shake the bed.
When should you not wear earplugs at night?
If you need to hear a baby, a child, or someone you look after, do not rely on earplugs. The same goes for nights when you are on call. On those nights, a sleep mask can still help with light, and a fan can soften steady noise without making it harder to hear someone call for you.

Questions people ask
Will earplugs stop me hearing my alarm?
For most people, no. Sleep earplugs soften sound rather than blocking it, and alarms are loud and close. Test yours on your first night to be sure.
Do earplugs block out all sound?
No. Sleep earplugs turn sound down. You will still hear loud, sudden sounds like an alarm or someone calling your name.
What is the best alarm if I wear earplugs?
A loud, sharp tone on a phone or clock right next to your bed, or a vibrating alarm on your wrist. A second backup alarm helps while you get used to them.
Can I wear earplugs if I have a baby?
If you are the one who needs to hear the baby, do not rely on earplugs. If your partner is on duty that night, earplugs can help you rest.
